Growing up in a small village in Kenya, Lillian faced many challenges, from severe hunger to having no shoes or clothes in her earlier years. She grew up in a polygamous family. She slept in one bed with all her siblings; her father beat the children and their mother. In addition to her harsh upbringing, Lillian faced the practice of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), among other grave cultural challenges. Women in her village were, and continue to be, treated like objects with no voice or a safe place to run to for refuge.

Through resilience and perseverance, Lillian embraced these traditions as everyday practices growing up, until she realised that they were unfair and promised her mother that she would do something about it.

In her later years, Lillian migrated to Australia, where she self-funded a Degree in Nursing at Central Queensland University. She later graduated with a Master of Nursing at the University of Queensland while raising her two boys. She is now ready to bring awareness to the world on the issues she and many others have faced growing up.

Looking Back to Move Forward shows readers that despite your upbringing and past, you must never give up.

Lillian Muchiri is an intuitive, conscious, motivating speaker who reflects on her upbringing and the grit that saw her move from Kenya to Australia, embracing a new cultural awareness that differed from what she had grown up with and thought was normal. For the last decade, Lillian has been working as a Clinical Nurse in various disciplines. In the recent past, Lillian has been specialising in the mental health field where she has helped many people recover from mental health and life challenges and reclaim their lives. Lillian runs Karibu Life & Recovery Coaching, where she works with clients from diverse backgrounds. She works with immigrants, NDIS clients, LGBTQIA+ and all success-minded individuals to build on their strengths to overcome any life challenges, reclaim their lives to become independent and move forward.

“To Grief With Love”

SATURDAY JULY 19

To Grief with Love is a beautifully formatted art book that airs grief in all its forms and complexities. The book is a compilation of Zoe’s Grief Room diaries, woven with heartachingly expressive sketches, poetry and prose. They come together as a beautiful gift of comfort and partnering. This book honours all the real and raw emotions experienced in grief, yet is filled with light, hope, and most of all love. A hug in a book.

Zoe Strickland grew up in East Yorkshire, lived her adult life in North London, and immigrated with her husband and three boys to Australia in 2007. She became a natural therapies practitioner, living and working in the tropical Cairns community, teaching hypno-birthing and mindfulness meditation.

After her loss, Zoe found solace in living life in the slow lane and followed creative and intuitive pursuits. She facilitates grief workshops and a shared love of wand making. In 2023, she became a qualified florist, finding joy in flowering beginnings, endings and everything in between. She is now a proud grandma, and lives with her husband, on the beautiful Sunshine Coast in Queensland, near to her children and grandchildren.
