The Emperor of Gladness by Ocean Vuong
The Emperor of Gladness shows the profound ways in which our lives are changed by the most unexpected of people. When Hai takes a job at a diner to support himself and Grazina, his fellow workers become the family he didn’t expect to find. United by desperation and circumstance, and existing on the fringes of society, together they bear witness to each other’s survival.
Speak To Me of Home by Jeanine Cummins
Her daughter, in New York with a family of her own, wishes she could forget her muddy feelings about where she comes from – the same feelings which motivated her 22-year-old daughter Daisy to reconnect with their past.
Daisy, who has momentarily forgotten everything, hears the word critical in a hospital room in San Juan and remembers, all at once, the car that hurtled towards her, the terrible storm, and something else. What was it?
Now Ruth and Rafaela must return to the city where it all began, to gather by Daisy’s bedside and confront the twists of fate that have caused a growing rift in their family and led them to this moment.
Nightshade by Michael Connelly
It’s all business as usual in his new territory, following up drunk-and-disorderlies and petty thefts, until Stilwell receives a report of a body found wrapped in plastic at the bottom of the harbour. He begins working the case, and soon he’s forced to cross all lines of protocol and jurisdiction in pursuit of justice.
But when Stilwell discovers dark secrets hidden in the shadows he must now ask: Is Catalina really the serene island it appears to be or is it brewing a deadly poison?
Searching for Charmian by Suzanne Chick
As Suzanne learns about the mother she will never meet, she finds herself re-examining the course her own life has taken, gaining insight into the woman who brought her up – her adoptive mother, Marjorie Shaw. More than just a fascinating piece of literary history, this is a moving account of the consequences of adoption and Suzanne’s search for identity.
A Wisdom Of Age by Jacinta Parsons
For this book, Jacinta mines wisdom directly from those who know how to do it well, those older women who say, This is what feels good.
Capturing the brewing tone of revolution that sits in the hearts of middle-aged and older women, A Wisdom of Age tells a different story about ageing – a story about reclaiming the fierce girl we have inside us; about an unapologetic taking up of space; about speaking out and re-finding our confidence; and finally, about wisdom.
Community
Community is important to all of us. We treasure our place in this jewel of the Sunshine Coast.
We have strong ties to local schools, libraries and clubs, and you will see that we are regularly involved in local events, as well as hosting a multitude of our own book events from the smallest local authors to those of international renown.

Growing up in a small village in Kenya, Lillian faced many challenges, from severe hunger to having no shoes or clothes in her earlier years. She grew up in a polygamous family. She slept in one bed with all her siblings; her father beat the children and their mother. In addition to her harsh upbringing, Lillian faced the practice of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), among other grave cultural challenges. Women in her village were, and continue to be, treated like objects with no voice or a safe place to run to for refuge.
Through resilience and perseverance, Lillian embraced these traditions as everyday practices growing up, until she realised that they were unfair and promised her mother that she would do something about it.
In her later years, Lillian migrated to Australia, where she self-funded a Degree in Nursing at Central Queensland University. She later graduated with a Master of Nursing at the University of Queensland while raising her two boys. She is now ready to bring awareness to the world on the issues she and many others have faced growing up.
Looking Back to Move Forward shows readers that despite your upbringing and past, you must never give up.
Lillian Muchiri is an intuitive, conscious, motivating speaker who reflects on her upbringing and the grit that saw her move from Kenya to Australia, embracing a new cultural awareness that differed from what she had grown up with and thought was normal. For the last decade, Lillian has been working as a Clinical Nurse in various disciplines. In the recent past, Lillian has been specialising in the mental health field where she has helped many people recover from mental health and life challenges and reclaim their lives. Lillian runs Karibu Life & Recovery Coaching, where she works with clients from diverse backgrounds. She works with immigrants, NDIS clients, LGBTQIA+ and all success-minded individuals to build on their strengths to overcome any life challenges, reclaim their lives to become independent and move forward.
